Who Will Survive The 6th Mass Extinction?

It’s no secret that our success as a specieshas been pretty bad for a lot of other species on earth. In fact, some scientists believe we are currently in the midst of Earth’s6th mass extinction event, caused entirely by us. Us, taking up more land that used to be wild habitat, using up more fresh water, and belching out greenhouse gases that are changing the climate. Are food preservatives bad for you? – Eleanor Nelsen

Food doesn’t last. In days, sometimes hours, bread goes moldy, apple slices turn brown, and bacteria multiply in mayonnaise. But you can find all of these foodsout on the shelf at the grocery store, hopefully unspoiled, thanks to preservatives. But what exactly are preservatives? How do they help keep food edibleand are they safe? There are two major factors that causefood to go bad:microbes and oxidation. How Long Can Humans Outrun Extinction?

Modern humans evolved a couple hundred thousandyears ago. And between ice ages, volcanoes, climate change, earthquakes, droughts, floods, and Reddit being down sometimes, we’ve seen some stuff. But on cosmic timescales, two or three hundredthousand years is just a drop in the bucket. The longer we’re around, the more likelywe are to witness something truly Earth-shattering,whether metaphorically or literally. And someday, if we’re still here,we’ll have to face things like Earth melting as it’s engulfed by the Sun. Or the Sun going out. Or galaxies colliding. One way or the other, we’re…

What is the best way to preserve food?

Are you tired of your food going towaste? Freeze drying could be your answer. There are a few different ways of preserving food. First, you can dehydrate. A dehydrator uses heat to slowly dry out food. The heat ends up destroying a lotof the foods’ nutritional value and shrinks and toughens the food. And most foods can’t even be dehydrated, like soup, cheese and ice cream. You can also try home canning. Canning also uses heat which, once again, destroys nutrition. Canning is hot, messy and requires careful attention to detail.…
